About the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites:

The Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites (ISMHS) is a statewide museum system with 12 locations including the Indiana State Museum in downtown Indianapolis and 11 historic sites in the Indiana communities of Evansville, Corydon, New Albany, Rome City, Madison, Fountain City, Geneva, New Harmony, Nashville, Vincennes, and Metamora.

This position salary range is $50,000 to $55,000 per year.

About the Job:

The Curator of Cultural History will assist with the acquisition and curation of the division’s cultural history collections. The position will serve as curator and is responsible for the interpretation, development and curation of artifacts within the cultural history collections, with particular expertise or willingness to develop expertise in a broad range of subjects including popular culture; sports; military history; communications, including radio and television; performing and literary arts; and paper-based historic materials.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Plan and perform curatorial duties including collections strategy, artifact acquisition and interpretation within the Arts and Culture section. Serve as ISMHS’ expert in areas of curatorial focus.
  • Develop and organize collections in areas of expertise, including cataloguing artifacts.
  • Direct and implement the acquisition of cultural history artifacts and their documentation in areas of expertise.
  • Serve as curator for assigned historic sites aligned with collection areas and expertise. Assist with projects and interpretation at other historic sites as needed.
  • Build and cultivate relationships and partnerships between the museum and individuals and groups within Indiana communities. Serve as a liaison on projects between the museum and other institutions and organizations.
  • Develop strategies for the identification, collection, conservation and storage of cultural history artifacts donated to the Museum and Historic Sites.
  • Conduct research to determine the authenticity, history and relevance to Indiana history of items within the cultural history collection.
  • Correspond and negotiate with administrators of other institutions or potential donors to obtain loan collections or to exchange information or data.
  • Assist with fundraising consultation and grants as needed.
  • Assist with marketing and communications efforts related to collections, exhibitions and areas of expertise, including social media.
  • Assist with core rotation process, working closely with curatorial, collections management and experience staff. Serve on cross-disciplinary project teams.
  • Write for scholarly and popular publications associated with cultural history collections.
  • Lecture for specialized and general audiences regarding cultural history collections and areas of expertise.
  • Take part in strategic planning for the section, division and institution
  • Assist senior curator with section administration as needed
  • Supervise volunteers, interns, contract and other staff as needed.

What You’ll Need for Success:

  • MA in History, American Studies, or other relevant field and at least five years curatorial or collections management experience required. Supervisory experience preferred. We will also consider a combination of experience and education that provides the necessary skills for the position.
  • Commitment to professional standards as set by the American Alliance of Museums.
  • Understanding of museum standards and ethics regarding the handling and display of artifacts and specimens.
  • Working knowledge of computer and scanning equipment and relevant applications an
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Effective public speaking skills and abilty to engage with a diverse range of audiences.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize numerous projects and assignments to maintain workflow and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work within a team and facilitate team decisions.
